Linear sensors are used for direct and absolute measurement of distances.They can be operated by rod shafts or slides. They are built in with integrated microcontroller system providing different fatory settable options & functions like limit switches, zooming, RS232 RS485 interface and more. Also analog & digital outputs are available.
Linear Hall sensors differ from the switches as follows: Depending on the magnetic field, the output does not have a discrete switching state, but provides a signal proportional to the magnetic field strength. This output signal can be delivered as an analog output voltage, a pulse-width-modulated signal (PWM) or even as a modern bus protocol (SENT). Different packages are available: through hole SMD, single or dual die configuration, with our without integrated capacitors.

potentiometer rotary position sensors can detect the position of something

As their name implies,potentiometer rotary position sensors detect the position of something which means that they are referenced either to or from some fixed point or position. These types of sensors provide a “positional” feedback.
One method of determining a position, is to use either “distance”, which could be the distance between two points such as the distance travelled or moved away from some fixed point, or by “rotation” (angular movement). For example, the rotation of a robots wheel to determine its distance travelled along the ground. Either way, Position Sensors can detect the movement of an object in a straight line using linear potentiometer position sensor
or by its angular movement using Rotational Sensors.
